HORSESENSE LESSONS:
Unmounted horsekeeping classes that will teach you how to keep your horse healthy and happy.
It’s not enough, in our view, to be able to ride a horse: truly
effective horsemanship requires that riders understand and attend to
their horse’s basic needs. That means learning how horses are put
together, what makes them behave in certain ways, and how to keep them
safe and healthy. Horses are too often victims of “benign abuse”
from well-meaning owners and riders. That’s why we think it’s
important to offer horsekeeping instruction to both adults and children
–- even those that don’t currently own a horse.
The Curriculum -- and how to make it work for you.
See our Horsekeeping Levels Program to learn how our progressive educational system is designed to give you a thorough working knowledge of horse management. HorseSense clinics are a great way to earn those Horsekeeping ribbons!
HorseSense clinics are also an important part of our Working Student Program. Working students receive free hands-on horsekeeping lessons as they work around HorseSense, supplemented with the HorseSense clinics listed below. Working Students should also use our Study Guides to help them progress through the Levels.
The Clinics -- a practical approach to learning
horse care topics.
Our clinics are designed to teach the basics of horsekeeping with a fun, hands-on approach. We teach:
Horse Behavior and Safety
Feed and Nutrition
Health and Veterinary Care
Bandaging
Hoof Care
Tack and Grooming
Trailer Safety
Horse ID: Breeds, Colors, Markings, Conformation and Gaits
Longeing and Ground Training
With the exception of the Safety class which needs to be your first class for obvious reasons, these clinics may be taken in any order. If you miss one topic, you can just catch it the next time it is offered. There is no obligation to attend every class in the series. We also have an advanced series of clinics available upon request for more experienced horse folks -- same topics, but with a lot more detailed information.
Clinics are only $15 per person. If you bring a friend, you can each attend for the Buddy Rate of $10. Advanced registration is required. Clinics are appropriate for anyone aged 8-108, regardless of their equine experience.
